Harnessing AI for Good: Empowering Accessible Grassroots Activism Against Deceptive MLM Practices
Yesterday, Roberta Blevins, host of the Life After MLM podcast, and I hosted a livestream on YouTube to introduce a powerful new tool designed to aid in our ongoing efforts against deceptive MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) practices. A New Tool for MLM Advocacy
Our fight against the deceptive practices of MLMs is ongoing, and we’ve made significant strides, including pushing for comments on the FTC's business opportunity rule and deceptive earnings claims rulemakings. The FTC has shown that they are interested in pursuing many of the changes we passionately advocate for, such as requiring MLMs to provide accurate income disclosure statements to all prospective recruits and holding MLM companies liable for deceptive earnings claims made by their representatives. Unfortunately, some members of Congress are again attempting to bind the FTC’s hands and restrict them from making more progress via the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act for 2025.
We know that reaching out to elected officials is a much different ask than submitting an anonymous comment online. To simplify and encourage grassroots activism, we developed this new comment and script crafter (I have been calling it the Consumer Advocate Tool, but I’m open to suggestions). This widget leverages the power of AI to craft personalized emails and phone scripts for contacting elected officials about the proposed appropriations bill.

Our tool uses AI to generate unique, personalized messages based on user inputs, ensuring that each message is compelling, includes personal information, and avoids the form letter appearance. By making it easier to communicate with elected officials, we’re empowering more people to take action against deceptive MLM practices.

Our widget ensures that anyone can effectively advocate for change without feeling intimidated by the process. By providing structured guidance and generating professional, personalized messages, we lower the barriers to participation and make it easier for more voices to be heard.

Phone Scripts: Creates phone scripts from the email drafts for calls.
Contact Details: Provides contact information for your representatives in the House and Senate based on your ZIP code.
How to Use the Tool

Fill Out the Form: Enter your basic information and relevant experiences.
Generate the Message: Click "Generate Letter" to create a draft email. Review it, and if unsatisfied, generate a new one.
Phone Script: Automatically creates a phone script from the email draft. Copy, paste, and modify it before making calls.
Contact Information: Use the provided contact details to send your email and make calls.
Why Immediate Action Is Crucial
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the appropriations bill, which includes budget considerations for the FTC related to MLM regulation, the week of July 21st. This timeline makes it crucial for us to act swiftly and ensure our voices are heard.

Regardless of how many emails to representatives we can hopefully churn out this week, what I am really looking forward to the most is collaborating with other activists to adjust and improve this tool for future deployments—together, we can contribute to broader regulatory changes and protect others from falling prey to deceptive MLM schemes.
